Null
URL: nullspace.info. A forum for biomedical researchers at Harvard to post null, non-confirmatory, and negative results.
Created as final project for CS50: Introduction to Computer Science I, Null is a demonstration website that a classmate and I created to address the issue of publication bias. A large percentage of biomedical experiments produce negative results, however these results are drastically underrepresented in publications. While these results can be just as valid as those in the literature, negative results are rarely disseminated as there is little incentive to dump time and resources in a producing a journal-worthy publication from an initial negative result. Therefore, Null allows for researchers to post, view, and comment on negative results in a more succinct, paragraph style. Posting on the site in its current form is limited to the Harvard community as a Harvard PIN Login is required to make an account, ensuring authenticity of the user.
To maintain a professional look of the site and avoid the unsightliness plaguing many forums, an emphasis on an intuitive user experience and a clean front-end design were key. The back-end is built in PHP and Javascript with a SQL database. The project took about one week of coding.
